Over-the-top VOIP users to reach 1 billion in 4 years

Android Central

Over the top (OTT) VOIP users will top 1 billion by 2017, according to some new research. It's no surprise that traditional voice call usage is going down, but that doesn't mean that people are stopping voice calls all together. The transition to VOIP (Voice Over IP) calling services is on the rise, according to a report out today by Juniper Research, and could reach a massive 1 billion users in just 4 short years. Today, current VOIP solutions like Skype and Talkatone don't integrate natively with phones but rather run as standalone apps, and don't always work as well as users would expect over regular 3G data technologies.

Fortunately as LTE becomes the standard for mobile data, the higher speeds and lower latency will help this move. Apps will start to take advantage with better audio codecs and other software innovations as well. The unknown in all of this is how carriers will react to the move towards VOIP solutions as primary calling options for users.

Inside UPS' Worldport: How a shipping titan moves 2,000 packages every 17 seconds

DNP Inside UPS' Worldport facility how one of the world's shipping titans moves 2,000 packages every 17 seconds

Online shopping seems like a straightforward process: hunt down the perfect item, trudge through the checkout pipeline and await a package's inevitable arrival. The trip between a warehouse and your doorstep, however, involves meticulous organization on a massive scale. In order to pull off such a feat, United Parcel Service (UPS) relies on Worldport in Louisville, Ky.: a 5.2 million-square-foot processing facility that's capable of sorting up to 416,000 packages an hour. Within Worldport, 70 aircraft docks and 155 miles of conveyor belts await the arrival of packages from over 220 countries and territories. So, what happens when UPS gets ahold of those parcels destined for air delivery? The folks clad in brown took us inside their largest sorting hub to find out.

Shocker: Apple is working on iOS 7 and the next iPhone!

Apple is working on iOS 7 and the next generation iPhone 6,1. Shocking, I know, considering Apple has released a new version of iOS and a new iPhone each year, every year, since 2007. However, the web being the web, stories are popping up today, and tips are coming in, helpfully reminding us all of just that.

iMore has seen iOS 7 references in our visitor logs for a while now, and Apple has no doubt been working on it since, well, they launched iOS 6 last year, if not earlier.

If Apple holds to their recent pattern, we'll see a beta six months from now, presumably at WWDC 2013 in June. (Originally Apple ran separate spring iOS preview events, so there's always an outside chance they'll "put the pedal to the metal" and go back to that, but WWDC is a good fit.)

As to iPhone 6,1, before anyone jumps to "iPhone 6! iPhone 6!" conclusions, internal model numbers only coincidentally correlate to release name. The iPhone 5 is indeed iPhone 5,1, but the iPhone 4S was iPhone 4,1, and the iPhone 4 was iPhone 3,1. The iPad 3 was iPad 3,1, but the iPad 4 was "only" iPad 3,4.

Again, if Apple's past behavior is any indicator of future behavior, than iPhone 6,1 could just as easily be called iPhone 5S when it's introduced. If that's this spring, a similar time frame to when the Verizon iPhone 4 was released, then an incremental iPhone 5S makes even more sense. And if there's more than one new iPhone this year, the way there was more than one new iPad last year, then all sorts of interesting new possibilities spring to mind.

So, yeah, everything looks like it's happening as expected. Now if Apple wasn't working on iOS 7 and the next generation iPhone, that'd it big news.

In the meantime, we've been listing out some of the iOS 7 features we want, and next generation iPhone ideas we could see implemented. Feel free to add your wish lists below!

A two-pronged approach to immunotherapy for brain, kidney ...

After withdrawing an initial public offering early last summer, a company employing a two-pronged approach to immunotherapy is raising private capital as it looks toward phase 3 trials of brain and kidney cancer drugs.

A December U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing indicates that TVAX Biomedical Inc. had raised $2 million in private financing and could continue raising $6 million. The company had planned for an IPO in early 2012 but withdrew it in May, citing poor market conditions. A representative for the company could not provide immediate details on the funding.

TVAX?s approach to immunotherapy is two-fold: vaccinate the patient with a combination of his own cancer cells and a powerful adjuvant, then use the partially activated T cells generated by that vaccine to manufacture high numbers of activated, cancer-killing T cells that are administered intravenously back into the patient.

On their own, both of these approaches have demonstrated therapeutic potential for cancer, the company says, but not enough to make them stand-alone treatments. Together in TVI-Brain-1, the company?s lead candidate for glioblastomas, they improved the median survival of patients by 50 percent in a phase 2 clinical trial.

Currently in an ongoing phase 2 trial, TVI-Brain-1 has been authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for pivotal phase 3 trials in about 400 patients newly diagnosed with glioblastoma. The company anticipates the trial will begin this year and produce complete data by 2016. It also received FDA authorization to conduct phase 3 trials of the product in kidney cancer.

TVAX boasts that its platform has the potential to be less toxic than radiation and/or chemotherapy. It won?t be cheaper, though. In its corporate fact sheet (PDF), the company estimates prices would be in line with current treatments. A variety of other cancer applications for the platform are included in the company?s pipeline.

The trouble with cancer is that the immune system doesn?t recognize cancerous cells as foreign pathogens the way it does with viruses, etc. Scientists, then, are challenged with the task of training the immune system to eliminate cancer, which has been especially challenging in central nervous system cancers. But, like TVAX, a few other companies are taking cell-based approaches to vaccinations for brain cancer including ImmunoCellular Therapeutics, Innocell Corp., Northwest Biotherapeutics and Oncovir Inc. There are about 135,000 Americans with a history of cancer of the brain or other nervous system, reports to the National Cancer Institute.

TVAX is based in Lenexa, Kansas and was founded in 2004.

Is the end near? Robot programmed to build its own tools

9 hrs.

The robot apocalypse appears to be getting ever?closer, especially now that a team of European scientists has designed a machine that can make its own tools.

Tool use is a sign of intelligence that distinguishes humans, chimps, and a few other smart creatures from everything else.

Robots were on the ?everything else? list until the team at ETH Zurich outfitted one with a glue gun (technically called hot metal adhesive). It uses the gun to build tools one step at a time, similar to the way a 3-D printer builds stuff one layer at a time.

In the video below, the robot builds a cup and attaches it to itself in order to move water from one dish to the next.

For now, the robot must be programmed to execute its autonomous tool building and a cup isn?t exactly as terrifying as, say, a sharp?spear ...?or a photon cannon.

But this is?a step on the path towards robots that can think for themselves, decide what tools are needed to accomplish their tasks, and build them to get the job done. We'll let you know when it's time to panic.
