Cross-Cultural Conflict Avoidance ? Maximum Change Inc

While avoiding allows conflict to go unresolved or projects responsibility on to others for solving the problem (Fletcher, 2012), it does not allow these individuals to preserve important goals, values and ideas ? nor does it allow them to preserve relationships (Elmer, 1993, p 36). From a Westerner point of view, the ideal that avoiding conflict somehow causes it to go away most often creates the dynamic in which the individual ends up with weak or superficial relationships and little to no influence on important decisions (Elmer, 1993, p 36). However, Elmer (1993) does argue that strategic withdrawal can be a wise choice when emotions are running high and if the confrontation may cause someone to act unwisely or lose control (p 39). Conflict avoidance is also wise when the potential consequences of confrontation are too serious (Elmer, 1993, p 39). As Elmer (1993) puts it, avoiding conflict can be a sign of wisdom and maturity in some cases and in others it may signal an unwillingness to discuss important issues or a refusal to take a stand on a given decision (p 39).

Compromising within conflict resolution in fact seeks to set a middle ground between two parties (Fletcher, 2012). However, Elmer (1993) argues many simply give in to accommodate or smooth over the differences (p 39). Some may see most issues as negotiable and differences not worth fighting about (Elmer, 1993, p 39). Those who are more apt to accommodate are most often willing to forfeit personal goals and values and can be taken advantage of since they are most likely unable to say no (Elmer, 1993,? p39). Contrary to the Western view of conflict resolution, our Asian counterparts are more likely to work to prevent conflicts or avoid them altogether (Fletcher, 2012).

House ready to OK GOP budget, rejects rival plans

(AP) ? Republicans are ready to ram through the House an election-year, $3.5 trillion budget that showcases their deficit-cutting plan for revamping Medicare and slicing everything from food stamps to transportation while rejecting President Barack Obama's call to raise taxes on the rich.

The blueprint by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., was headed for all but certain House passage Thursday, mostly along party lines. It faces a demise that is just as sure in the Democratic-run Senate, which plans to ignore it, but the battle remains significant because of the clarity with which it contrasts the two parties' budgetary visions for voters.

Republicans were focused on sharper deficit reduction and starkly less government than Democrats wanted and were proposing to lower income tax rates while erasing many unspecified tax breaks. Obama and Democrats were ready to boost taxes on families making above $250,000 and on oil and gas companies, add spending for roads and schools and cull more modest savings from domestic programs.

"They're choosing the next election over the next generation," Ryan said, deriding Democrats' plans as far too timid. He added, "If we don't tackle these fiscal problems soon, they're going to tackle us as a country."

Democrats said they, too, were eager to stanch deficits that now exceed $1 trillion annually. But they said it needed to be done in a more balanced way, with rich and poor alike sharing the load.

"It's a path to greater prosperity ? if you're already wealthy," said Rep. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, top Democrat on the Budget panel, mocking the "Path to Prosperity" title Ryan has given his document. "Because our Republican colleagues refuse to ask millionaires to contribute one cent to deficit reduction, they hit everyone and everything else."

In a pair of preliminary votes expected Thursday, conservatives were offering their own proposal with deeper spending cuts and far faster deficit-reduction than the GOP plan, claiming to balance the budget in just five years. Democrats were pushing a measure featuring pumped-up spending for education and new tax credits for companies creating jobs and raising wages, while claiming savings from winding down the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, government waste and reductions in farm payments.

Both were destined to be defeated.

Underscoring the prickly partisan gulf over how to tackle the budget's drastic imbalances, the House late Wednesday on a 382-38 vote easily shot down a compromise, bipartisan deficit-cutting plan by moderates of both parties that mingled tax increases with spending cuts.

The measure was modeled roughly on a package produced by Obama's deficit-reduction commission. The commission's plan drew praise from prominent deficit foes but was treated coolly by Obama and congressional leaders of both parties.

The House also voted 414-0 Wednesday to reject Obama's budget, with Democrats accusing the GOP of forcing the vote to embarrass them. Democrats were concerned Republicans would use campaign ads to link Democrats who supported Obama's plan to all of its details, including tax increases and boosts for unpopular programs.

Congress' budget is a nonbinding road map that suggests tax and spending changes that lawmakers should make in separate, later legislation.

Particularly with voters deciding control of the White House and the Capitol in November, the two parties are sure to stalemate each other's budgetary priorities until after the election.

The House GOP budget would cut spending by $5.3 trillion more over the next decade than Obama's would ? out of more than $40 trillion that would still be spent during that period. It envisions repeal of the president's health care overhaul and sets a course for deep reductions for highway and rail projects, research and aid to college students and farmers while easing planned defense cuts.

It also would cut taxes by $2 trillion more than the president over that time, leaving Republicans seeking about $3.3 trillion in deeper deficit reduction than Obama.

Drawing the most political heat was Ryan's plan for Medicare, the $500 billion-a-year health insurance program for older Americans that all agree is growing so fast that its future financing is shaky. Both parties know that seniors vote in high numbers and care passionately about the program.

Republicans would leave the plan alone for retirees and those near retirement, letting the government continue paying much of their doctors' and hospital bills.

For younger people, Medicare would be reshaped into a voucher-like system in which the government would subsidize people's health care costs, which Republicans say would drive down federal costs by giving seniors a menu of options that would compete with each other. Democrats say government payments won't keep up with the rapid inflation of medical costs, leaving many beneficiaries struggling to afford the care they need.

"It ends the Medicare guarantee," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said of Ryan's budget.

"This plan doesn't end the Medicare guarantee," said Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz. "Arithmetic does. Unless we change something, unless we put it on a solvent footing, the Medicare guarantee is gone."

Republicans would turn Medicaid, the nearly $300 billion-a-year federal-state health insurance program for the poor, into a grant that states could use as they wish. They also would trim its growth by $800 billion over the next decade.

Speaking to Business Owners in South Dakota; An Educational Security?Event

Note: Here?s my Hertz rental car at the Rapid City Airport ? If they had known that I have seven kids, they would have also known that I only know how to drive big vehicles?

It?s a great day in Rapid City, SD ? I love this job because I love events like the one we are doing today.? Every business owner out there is working hard to build a successful company, and today is no different.? 72 of these business owners and leaders are meeting today to gain insights on how to deal with information security as their business grows, and the threats increase.? As they focus on their customers and offerings, someone has to sort out the technology, and figure out how to maintain it ? keeping it secure, up, and running smoothly.

A local solution provider in town is sponsoring this event ? we?ve been preparing for this over the past few weeks, looking at who should attend, who will benefit, and how to best address the issues businesses are facing.? The exciting thing is, we have answers.? We have an understanding of what these companies are facing, and we?ve put together a plan to address it.? We have a way to show them the problem, a way to measure the effects it is having on their businesses, and a way to bring managed remediation to any issues that may exist.? It?s simple to do, compelling, and valuable to both the sponsor and the attendee.

This is what we do ? the technology business is not about selling the next widget, or even maximizing profits ? it?s about the people you are serving through it; in this case, small and medium business owners and managers. The profit is a measure of your success in carrying out the mission.? At the end of the day it?s a win/win proposition.

Indeed, Duggar's instincts were correct: The technician later revealed that she could not detect a heartbeat from their unborn baby, whom the family posthumously named Jubilee Shalom Duggar.

(AP) ? Lions Gate Entertainment seized a pot of gold.

When the film and television production company bought Summit Entertainment in January, the deal brought bankable teen franchises "The Hunger Games" and "Twilight" under one roof.

The first of four planned "Hunger Games" films broke the record for a non-sequel over the weekend with a $153 million haul in the U.S. and Canada. That beat expectations and gave it the third-highest opening weekend ever. And the "Twilight" finale is set for release in November.

These two movies could generate about $450 million in profit combined, estimates Cowen & Co. analyst Doug Creutz. The adventures of bow-wielding heroine Katniss Everdeen alone could translate to 6 to 7 years of higher earnings, Creutz says, adding that Lions Gate may post its first profit in five years for the fiscal year that ends March 31.

More than two-thirds of Lions Gate's revenue comes from the movie business, so its first blockbuster means a lot. It had been getting by with staples like Tyler Perry comedies and the "Saw" horror series.

The rest of Lions Gate's revenue comes from television productions such as "Mad Men," which kicked off its fifth season Sunday. The company doesn't reap ad revenue from the hit TV show, but the show's success with audiences keeps Lions Gate in demand as a production company. It also boosts sales of DVDs and licensing revenue from reruns.

Plus there's another show in the hopper: Charlie Sheen's "Anger Management," which debuts in June on FX. If the first 10 episodes go well, the company will automatically be signed up for several years of work.

Lions Gate's stock is up more than 75 percent this year. Not surprising, given the huge buzz leading up to the release of "The Hunger Games." But this weekend's better-than-expected opening led several analysts to raise their profit estimates.

The only two movies ever to bring in more at the box office on their opening weekend were last year's "Harry Potter" finale, which took in $169.2 million, and 2008's "The Dark Knight," which brought $158.4 million its first weekend.

Some analysts said Lions Gate shares should reach or top $16 over the next year. The stock rose 65 cents, or 4.5 percent, to close at $15.18 on Monday.

(AP) ? Drugs took many things from Whitney Houston ? her pristine voice, clean image and her career ? and coroner's officials revealed Thursday that cocaine also played a role in the Grammy winner's death in the bathtub of a luxury hotel nearly six weeks ago.

Houston drowned accidentally at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Feb. 11, and autopsy results revealed heart disease and her recent and chronic cocaine use were contributing factors.

The results ended weeks of speculation about what killed the singer-actress at age 48 on the eve of the Grammy Awards and a planned comeback. Instead, Houston now joins the long list of entertainers who have died early with drugs at least partly to blame.

Coroner's officials did not reveal how much cocaine was found in Houston's system, but said there were signs of recent and chronic use. It was unclear whether she suffered a heart attack before drowning, Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said.

"We are saddened to learn of the toxicology results, although we are glad to now have closure," Patricia Houston, the singer's sister-in-law and manager, said in a statement.

Houston's death the night before the Grammys altered the awards ceremony and brought back immediate memories of the singer in her better days, belting out hits and starring in the feature films such as "The Bodyguard" and "Waiting to Exhale." Years later, Houston's drug use had robbed her of her ability to hit high notes and left her once clean image tarnished.

"The biggest devil is me. I'm either my best friend or my worst enemy," Houston told ABC's Diane Sawyer in an infamous 2002 television interview with then-husband Bobby Brown by her side.

In 2009, after she had divorced Brown, she told Oprah Winfrey that her cocaine and marijuana use took over her life. Both drugs were found in Houston's system after she died, though the marijuana and several other prescription drugs played no role in her death, coroner's officials said.

"I had so much money and so much access to what I wanted," Houston told Winfrey. "I didn't think about the singing part anymore. I was looking for my young womanhood."

Houston's planned comeback after that interview didn't pan out, but she was taking another shot this year with her appearance in a remake of the film "Sparkle."

She stars as the mother of a family of girls who form a singing group and struggle with fame and addiction. She also sang for the film, delivering a soulful rendition of the gospel hymn "His Eye is on the Sparrow."

It is unclear what impact, if any, the autopsy results will have on the film, although untimely death has not been an impediment to the posthumous releases of other actors and entertainers. Heath Ledger's performance in "The Dark Knight" helped propel the film to blockbuster status and earned the actor a posthumous Oscar. He died of an accidental prescription drug overdose in January 2008, months before the film's release.

More recently, Amy Winehouse's duet "Body and Soul" with Tony Bennett earned them a Grammy Award, months after the singer died unexpectedly in London. An inquest determined she died from an accidental alcohol overdose.

A spokesman for Sony Pictures did not return an email message Thursday seeking comment on whether Houston's autopsy results would alter marketing of "Sparkle."

It will be a couple weeks before the exact amount of cocaine in Houston's system is released, officials said.

The drug has been known to cause damage to the heart and could have cause Houston's death, said Dr. Michael Fishbein, professor of pathology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He had no role in the investigation.

He said a likely scenario was that Houston's cocaine use interfered with the normal function of her heart.

"There's no reason to drown in a bathtub unless you're incapacitated," Fishbein said.

Houston's friend and collaborators said after her death that they didn't believe she was still abusing drugs, and she described as being a complete professional on the "Sparkle" set.

Houston, a sensation from her first, eponymous album in 1985, was one of the world's best-selling artists from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, turning out such hits as "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," ''How Will I Know," ''The Greatest Love of All" and "I Will Always Love You."

She was buried last month in a New Jersey cemetery next to her father after an emotional four-hour funeral service that was attended by friends, family and superstars such as Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson and Roberta Flack

Communication versus Care | Sunrise Rounds

I am confused about the physician ? patient relationship. I see doctors as diagnosticians, advisors and caregivers.? I believe patients are information sources, organizers and do the healing.? It is a team.? However, three recent events have me baffled:

First, a friend of mine went to a doctor.? She found the doctor to be intelligent, well trained, made the likely diagnosis and gave solid healing advice.? She plans never to return to him because he was rude, made poor eye contact and rushed. In other words because he did not seem to care, even while giving excellent care, she will not return for care. Then, an online study was published looking at doctor rating systems. It found patients make decisions on choosing doctors based on waiting time, office organization, visit length and social criteria. Patients do not make decisions based on the quality of medicine practiced or delivered. Finally,?Theresa Brown in a New York Times Op-Ed piece noted that hospitals are routinely surveying patients and adjusting policy based on satisfaction measures, which may have little to do with the quality of care administered.

In other words, patients do not choose medical care using measures that necessarily have anything to do with achieving physical health. ??Therefore, when a patient interacts with a doctor there are three possible outcomes:

1. ?The physician cares and gives good care = the patient gets good care.

2. ?The physician cares and gives poor care = the patient gets poor care

3. ?The physician is uncaring and gives good care = the patient goes elsewhere, so the patient gets no care.

I am not certain what I should do with this information. I can to spend more time with my patients, appear to listen better, be on time and treat each patient like a relative. ?However, there is no guarantee this will actually result in better individual care. Still, it is clearly part of the physician?s job to create a caring and supportive environment. The point is that not all doctors pull ?caring? off and that does not necessarily make them poor doctors. ?They may be incomplete, but perhaps possess great medical skill.

In our society, we put the responsibility for the physician-patient relationship on the doctor. ?However, the patient is the one who suffers when the interaction deteriorates. ?While it is ideal to have a doctor who can build a caring emotional environment, frequently it is more vital to have a doctor with the ability to give excellent medical care.? Therefore, sometimes, when it comes to building this relationship, I think, the burden must fall to the patient.

Probably, the first step is being aware that the simple measures by which we judge normal human contact do not always work in the physician ? patient relationship. If you have a doctor who seems to have the skills and training you want, but you cannot seem to get him/her to give you the personal service you need, it may be time for you to fix that problem.

First, you will need to judge the doctor?s basic medical skill.? Where were they trained? Are they board certified in the specialty for which you need treatment? What is their reputation in the community?? When they give you a recommendation, does it jibe with other sources of information?? How do they keep current?? Do they use electronic medical records or web based professional materials?? Do pharmaceutical industry publications take up too much of their office?? Do their suggestions fit known medical standards?? Does a second opinion support their recommendations?? Can they supply you with references or quality data?? How often have they seen your kind of problem or performed the procedure in which you are interested?

In the next several years, we will see increasing true quality data. This will include infection rates, complications, survival, diagnosis volumes, procedure experience and costs.? More details beyond simple malpractice events will help patients navigate this difficult area. There will be an increasing public judgment of true medical quality.? Using this information patients will be able to choose physicians with whom they wish to build relationships.

If you believe ?your? doctor has the basic medical skills you need, but does not seem to be communicating with you or giving you the service you desire, you may need to take charge.? This may entail explaining to the doctor exactly what you expect from the relationship, and setting ground rules.? ?If being on time is important, ask him/her how things can be scheduled to get you in quickly.? If you need more teaching time, ask how this can be arranged. If the front desk staff is disorganized regarding insurance, perhaps meeting with the office manager may help. Speak up in this critical relationship, as you would in others.

If a particular doctor?s medical skills warrant, you need to take an aggressive approach to building your relationship.? At times, the patient must build and enforce the social contract.? Your health is worth that extra effort.

Joystiq: Your mother-in-law is going to love Angry Birds Space

Image
Rovio's furious fowl have fought menacing swine on traditional battlefields, foreign fronts and even through seasonal holidays -- outer space was obviously the next logical step. In case you somehow haven't heard, Angry Birds Space sees casual gaming's most perturbed feathered heroes escaping terra firma to, as always, reclaim their stolen eggs. Joystiq describes the title as a tweaked, but familiar affair with a new twist that literally changes the gravity of the situation -- challenging players with inventive stages built around planetoids that divert and redirect the birds' trajectories. Sure, it might not resurrect a dead horse, but the new mechanic, they said, is probably enough to keep your in-laws entertained. Hit the source link below check out Joystiq's full review.

Physiotherapy/Physical Therapy to Revive ... - Health And Fitness Tips

Nowadays, people who are experiencing muscular, cerebral and emotional problems can regain their good health through physical therapy or physiotherapy. Only a certified practitioner can deliver the safest and best treatment for said injuries. If you are among those people who think physiotherapy is only for serious muscle injuries, then you are incorrect in your presumption. Even common ailments like painful back and muscles can be alleviated by physiotherapy. Physiotherapy can relieve the pain almost immediately. This type of treatment is especially beneficial to individuals who are experiencing some type of pain or discomfort but do not fancy the use of drugs or oral medications.

How do you perceive physical therapy or physiotherapy? Do you consider it to be a rigorous and boring physical exercise? Many people see this type of treatment as something that involves a set of boring and exhaustive physical workout. On the other hand, physiotherapy does more than merely doing all those exercises. All the exercises being executed in the duration of the treatment period are necessary to restore good health.

Your type of exercises and their intensity will depend on the gravity of your injury. If the injury is more serious, the patient might be asked to execute physical activities and given body massage as well for a particular timetable. There will be no need for medication because a person?s touch is thought to be a very powerful healer. Thus, some people choose a full massage over pain reliever medicines to relieve their aching body.

Apart from the physical injuries that physiotherapy can address, it can also improve blood circulation. And this is ideal for individuals who are constantly stressed out in their jobs. Another benefit of this treatment is that it helps to soothe the body?s nervous system. Practically everybody, particularly those who are engaged in manual labor, like the construction workers and drivers, among others, will most likely encounter muscle and body pains, which can be treated through the appropriate massage techniques. A person employing mobility will also be aided by physiotherapy and can make him more adept at handling these tools.

People who seek complete healing but are not keen about taking medications can benefit from physiotherapy. But this does not mean that other factors such as the type of your sickness, the degree of injury and your approval should be disregarded. You need to carefully choose your physiotherapist in terms of his or her reputation and whether or not he has a license to perform the treatment. Choosing your physiotherapist to administer to your injury is a delicate matter. Avoid getting treatment from just anybody who may not have the proper license.

Increase Your Home's Worth With These Home Improvement Ideas ...

You can do a lot to improve your home if you can find the right information. This article is packed with great ideas for making your home improvement dreams a reality. Take the time to absorb this knowledge and use it to get the best effect.

Install a lighting system that is enabled by motion detectors. You can save some money on electric bills if your exterior lights switch off automatically. This idea can also keep your house safer from break-ins, since would-be thieves will trigger the motion sensor and turn on the lights for all to see.

Look at the low areas around your property, including those near the foundation of the house. Fill these areas with firmly packed soil to stop water from gathering there and causing erosion. Water at the foundation of your home can seep in your home and rot any wood.

Your contractor must listen to your directions and concerns. It is important that they do the task that you asked them to do. If a contractor does not listen, they may do something that you told them not to do. Ask your contractor to repeat what you said back to you so that you know he understands.

Homeowners should use their best judgement when dealing with a contractor. Sometimes getting a second opinion is the best option. Many contractors will try to take advantage of home owners. Take the time to verify unexpected problems or new recommendations with a knowledgeable second opinion, before you put any more money on the table.

Pick up a flashy new mailbox to improve the outside of your home. A new mailbox may help your home look upgraded, and it can additional curb appeal. Be sure to follow city or county regulations pertaining to mailboxes when you are installing a new one. This is a quick and easy job that will take you a few hours at most.

Always paint before doing anything else. It is a lot easier to paint before the floor is installed. Regardless of whether or not you use protective coverings, it is almost impossible not to get at least a little paint on the floor.

Consider swapping out the current light bulbs that you have in your home with ones that use less wattage. This may end up costing you less money in the long run when it comes to your electric bill. So switch out your old bulbs for energy efficient ones.

To avoid excessive repair bills ensure storm water does not flow towards your walls. To keep run off water from damaging your house, create a gradual slope falling away from it, so that water doesn?t accumulate near your foundation. Another good idea is to add an extension to the downspout that carries water from the roof gutters. This will carry the water further from your foundation; again, avoiding water pooling beside your house.

Balancing can help! Strive to improve the amount of noise in your home. If your ceiling fan is wobbly and noisy, it likely needs to be balanced. Make sure that all screws are fastened tightly, especially where the blades attach to the arms and where the arms attach to the motor. When adjusting the screws, make sure that all parts of your fan are thoroughly clean.

Keep a little box of various fasteners available at all times. These handy little items are constantly needed when doing projects: picture hangers, screws of various types and sizes, an assortment of nails both small and large, and so on. The better the assortment you have of these, the fewer times you will have to delay a project and head for the hardware store.

The task of updating your home is not a far-fetched one. Although you can hire a professional to work on one of your projects, you can do many other projects yourself, even if you have not done much of this in the past. Use the tips you have just read to do your own project.

If you are searching, like many others, for prime property on the outskirts of the Louisville Metro area and think that maybe Anchorage Ky luxury homes works well for you, make sure to visit one of the area?s premier websites at http://anchoragekyhomesforsale.com/over-1000000/.

A dinosaur park seeks to bring footprints to light

The 600 footprints from the Jurassic period displayed beneath a domed exhibit center at Dinosaur State Park tell only part of their story.

Beneath the ground just east of the exhibit center, hidden from public view, lie another 1,500 tracks.

Originally uncovered and cataloged when the footprint trackway was discovered amid worldwide acclaim in August 1966, the tracks were reburied in 1976 to protect them from the ravages of water and weather.

They have not been viewed since.

A group of prominent Connecticut geologists would like to change that. They want to unearth the tracks and enclose them in a protective, permanent shelter, making them once again available for inspection by scientists and the public.

Their goal is to have the project completed by August 2016, in time for the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the trackway, one of the largest dinosaur track sites in North America.

"There's been a whole generation of scientists who have never looked at them," Dinosaur State Park Director Margaret Enkler said. "The number of people who have seen the full trackway is getting smaller and smaller.''

Enkler and her colleagues will make their case before more than 1,000 geoscientists, teachers and students who were to gather in downtown Hartford beginning Sunday for the Northeastern section meeting of the Geological Society of America. The 200-year-long history of geologic discovery in New England provides a unifying theme for the conference.

Early Jurassic footprints laid down 200 million years ago in ancient lake beds along the central rift valley of Massachusetts and Connecticut were first discovered in the early 1800s. A 19th century Amherst College teacher, Edward Hitchcock, named the scientific study of such fossils ichnology.

"The Connecticut Valley is literally a treasure trove of Jurassic Age fossils," said Nicholas G. McDonald, a geologist and science educator whose book about Dinosaur State Park, "Window into the Jurassic World," was published in 2010.

Five hundred of the tracks are now enclosed in the Exhibit Center's white geodesic dome. The center features a Jurassic mural and exhibit and a model of dilophosaurus, the carnivore considered likely to have made the tracks.

McDonald said uncovering the buried footprints could renew interest in the park, which is located in Rocky Hill, a suburb of about 19,000 just south of Hartford. The larger trackway would offer accessible field experience for younger scientists and science educators.

"There really is a need today as an educator to get away from the computer. So much science now you do on your laptop, and the thing that turned me on to geology was being outdoors.

"This is not a virtual image of a dinosaur track, but 2,000 actual tracks."

McDonald was among a group of scientists and students present in November when a narrow, 24-foot trench was dug to see how well the tracks had withstood their reinterment. They were found in excellent shape, despite a buildup of water from when a sump pump was mistakenly shut off.

From the moment of their discovery, great care was taken with the tracks. Bulldozer operator Edward McCarthy was working on the excavation for a new state building when he noticed odd, three-toed footprints on a slab of gray sandstone.

Work was immediately halted, a horde of scientists and students descended on the property and, as additional tracks were excavated, individual specimens were brushed clean and coated with material to prevent fracturing.

To protect them that first winter, the 10- to 16-inch tracks were covered with sheets of plastic, heating cable, layers of sand and mulch, and old tires, according to former state geologist Hugo Thomas, who took part in the original excavation.

Recognized as a Registered Natural Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Dinosaur State Park draws about 50,000 visitors a year to its exhibit center.

US soldier seen as 'level-headed' before massacre

The US soldier accused of killing 16 Afghan civilians during a shooting rampage was known to friends and family as "level-headed," his lawyers said as they planned to meet with him next week.

The suspect, identified as 38-year-old US Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales, had served three combat tours in Iraq -- where he was wounded twice -- and was on his first deployment to Afghanistan at the time of the killings.

Whisked out of Afghanistan to Kuwait in the days after the attacks, Bales was transferred to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on Friday, where US officials said he was being held in "pre-trial confinement."

The US Army said Bales was being kept in "special housing" in his own cell, but no details have been released on a trial or even the charges to be brought against him.

"Public reports that Sergeant Bales's supervisors, family and friends describe him as a level-headed, experienced soldier are consistent with information gathered by the defense team," his lawyers said in a statement on Saturday, saying it was still "too early" to determine what caused the attack.

Civilian attorneys John Henry Browne and Emma Scanlan, along with detailed military defense counsel Major Thomas Hurley, indicated they planned to spend "several days" meeting with Bales next week.

"Sergeant Bales's family is stunned in the face of this tragedy, but they stand behind the man they know as a devoted husband, father and dedicated member of the armed services," they added.

Friends and neighbors also expressed disbelief, telling local media he was a trusted soldier.

Kassie Holland, a family friend, told the Los Angeles Times that Bales and his family seemed "very normal."

"He was always really gentle with his kids. He was full of life and seemed like a happy guy for the most part," Holland said as news rocketed through the blue-collar towns around Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma.

Paul Wohlberg, Holland's father, told the Tacoma News Tribune that Bales, who had lived in the neighborhood for more than five years, seemed "an OK guy."

The two men talked over the years, but Wohlberg said Bales didn't talk about his Army experiences.

"History may not show him as a good guy," Wohlberg said. "But that's how he appeared to me."

Bales allegedly left his base in the southern province of Kandahar before sunrise on Sunday, entered a nearby Afghan village and opened fire, killing men, women and children.

One of the worst atrocities committed by US forces in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion over a decade ago, the incident plunged US-Afghan relations to an all-time low.

Ties were already badly damaged after Americans burned Korans last month, sparking a wave of deadly anti-American protests, and an earlier video that showed US Marines urinating on the corpses of Taliban militants.

Several websites containing pictures and stories about Bales, including a 2009 Defense Department page, were taken down by the time his identity was revealed Friday, but some versions of the Web pages could still be accessed, shedding light on his military career.

According to a cached online article dated February 2009 from the official US Army website, Bales participated in one of the bloodiest clashes of the Iraq war -- a January 2007 battle against a messianic Shiite sect in southern Iraq known as the Soldiers of Heaven.

In the 15-hour engagement, according to the article, 250 fighters were killed, all enemy -- and Bales said he was proud his unit "discriminated between the bad guys and the noncombatants and then afterward we ended up helping the people that three or four hours before were trying to kill us."

"I think that's the real difference between being an American as opposed to being a bad guy, someone who puts his family in harm's way like that," Bales said.

Browne, the civilian attorney, said this week his client had gotten angry about a serious injury that a comrade sustained the day before the massacre, but held no animosity toward Muslims.

Bales, who joined the army less than two months after the 9/11 attacks in 2001, was also upset because he did not believe he would be deployed to Afghanistan after his extensive Iraq duty, his lawyer said.

A US official told AFP that Bales was believed to have been drinking prior to the incident, a violation of US combat rules.

The New York Times quoted one official who said Bales may have "just snapped" due to a combination of stress and tensions with his wife, though Browne has rejected reports of his client's marital problems.
