Is the end near? Robot programmed to build its own tools

9 hrs.

The robot apocalypse appears to be getting ever?closer, especially now that a team of European scientists has designed a machine that can make its own tools.

Tool use is a sign of intelligence that distinguishes humans, chimps, and a few other smart creatures from everything else.

Robots were on the ?everything else? list until the team at ETH Zurich outfitted one with a glue gun (technically called hot metal adhesive). It uses the gun to build tools one step at a time, similar to the way a 3-D printer builds stuff one layer at a time.

In the video below, the robot builds a cup and attaches it to itself in order to move water from one dish to the next.

For now, the robot must be programmed to execute its autonomous tool building and a cup isn?t exactly as terrifying as, say, a sharp?spear ...?or a photon cannon.

But this is?a step on the path towards robots that can think for themselves, decide what tools are needed to accomplish their tasks, and build them to get the job done. We'll let you know when it's time to panic.

Google Domain Registration: Who Is It For? | Online Business Expert ...

?

Many people wonder who Google domain name registration is for and whether they can get a domain name registered with Google for personal use. To all those who have been wondering about this, the answer is yes. You can get a domain name directly from the search engine site. The good thing is that buying a domain name from Google is not that hard at all and it is useful for beginners as the domain comes pre configured with the required apps of Google such as Google analytics account, webmaster, amongst others.

If you want to buy a domain name from Google, you need to go to Google Apps and then choose business domain registration. However, if you want to go for a simpler method instead, what you can do is that you can go to Google and make a search for Google Domain Registration. By conducting this search, you will be taken to a Search Engine Ranking Page. Clicking on the first result will take you to a page to get your started.

From there, you can choose buying a domain name or search for a particular name that you are looking to register. If your name isn?t taken up already, you can simply go ahead and register it. The last step in purchasing a domain from search engine giant Google is to make sure that when you are entering registration data, the data is accurate and you abide by the terms and conditions of the search engine giant. Once you are through, you can then proceed and to go the Google Checkout tab by previously clicking on the Proceed tab.

Google domain name registration is the same as registering yourself a website on other sources such as iXWeb hosting or GoDaddy. The difference between these companies and Google is that the companies tend to better cater to your needs. If you are purchasing a domain through Google, you will be required to send it to your host and while this may not be a bad thing, it requires a little bit of an extra time than the usual standard operation. However, since Google is one of the most established names in the internet world, registering a website with it is a great idea. Moreover, Google also renders great software which will help all site owners and builders.

Many people over the internet have also reportedly brought domains from Google and others from different domain providers and reportedly, ranking of their domains which were brought from Google was higher than those brought from other companies. Google is surely a great way to get your website experience started. However, before you step on Google or any other hosting provider, it is better you conduct some research on your part and find out the best option for you, given your budget and other concerns.

All those who are looking to get their domain names registered should know that Google is not the only place from where you can get your domains registered as there are hundreds of other companies that let you do the same. However, it is all about quality and availability of domains, which is why the choice making part between different companies become difficult and tricky.

However, if you are someone who has made a final decision about Google, you should know that getting your domain registered with Google is a great idea as you are going to benefit by doing so in the long run and your site will probably get ranked better than other websites which are not registered on Google.

Lockerbie bomber Megrahi dies in Libya leaving unanswered questions

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Abdel Basset al-Megrahi, the Libyan convicted of the 1988 bombing of a PanAm flight over Lockerbie, died of cancer on Sunday aged 60, leaving many questions on the attack and its aftermath unanswered.

Megrahi, who said he was not responsible for bringing the jumbo jet down on the Scottish town and killing 270 people, was found guilty in 2001 but was freed in 2009 and returned to Libya because he had terminal cancer and was not expected to live long.

The decision by officials in Scotland to return Megrahi to Libya angered relatives of many victims, 189 of whom were American, and was criticized by Washington as Megrahi returned to a hero's welcome from Muammar Gaddafi.

That he survived for nearly three more years, outliving Gaddafi, who was overthrown last year, caused discomfort in Britain. Prime Minister David Cameron, visiting the United States on Sunday, said Megrahi should never have been freed.

Megrahi's brother Mohammed told Reuters he had died at his home in the Libyan capital from complications from prostate cancer and the funeral would take place on Monday.

"He was too sick to utter anything on his deathbed," another brother, Abdulhakim, said. "Just because Abdul Basset is dead doesn't mean the past is now erased," he said. "We will always tell the world that my brother was innocent."

Scottish leader Alex Salmond said his death confirmed his medical condition had been serious. "Mr Megrahi's death ends one chapter of the Lockerbie case, but it does not close the book," he said, noting Scottish lawyers were seeking other suspects.

Megrahi, the only person convicted for the bombing, was found guilty under Scots law of secretly loading a suitcase bomb onto a plane at Malta's Luqa Airport, where he was head of operations for Libyan Arab Airlines in December 1988.

The suitcase was transferred at Frankfurt to another flight and then onto New York-bound PanAm Flight 103 at London's Heathrow airport, concluded Scottish judges sitting at a converted Dutch military base selected as a neutral trial venue.

All 259 people aboard the aircraft were killed when it exploded and 11 people in the small town of Lockerbie died when homes and vehicles were obliterated by falling debris.

Relatives of those killed said it would not ease their loss and the White House said it would not end the quest for justice.

Megrahi, handed over by Gaddafi under a U.N.-brokered deal, always insisted he was merely an airline executive, not a Libyan intelligence agent as prosecutors charged.

His trial was part of a process of rapprochement by which Gaddafi distanced himself from association with groups regarded as terrorists in the West and secured renewed cooperation with Western firms keen to exploit Libya's oil and gas reserves.

CONTROVERSIES

Reaction to Megrahi's death reflected the controversies that have raged for years over his role.

Many people in Britain say they believe he was a scapegoat, while many in the United States have accused Britain of releasing him to help secure oil deals in Gaddafi's Libya. Britain has denied the charge.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer of New York, who wanted the Libyan government that took over after Gaddafi's ouster and killing by rebels to take Megrahi into custody, said his return to Libya was a major injustice.

"The whole deal smelled of a deal for oil for this man's freedom and that was almost blasphemy given what a horrible person he was and the terrible destruction and tragedy that he caused," Schumer told CNN.

"I don't know if we'll ever get to the bottom of it now."

British Prime Minister David Cameron, who was in opposition when Megrahi was freed, said in Chicago: "I've always been clear he should never have been released from prison.

"Today is a day to remember the 270 people who lost their lives in what was an appalling terrorist act. Our thoughts should be with them and their families for the suffering they've had."

Jim Swire, the father of one of the British Lockerbie victims, said he was convinced Megrahi was innocent.

"I've been satisfied for some years that this man had nothing to do with the murder of my daughter and I grit my teeth every time I hear newscasters say 'Lockerbie bomber has died'" he told BBC News television. "This is a sad day."

Megrahi told Reuters in October the West had exaggerated his role and the truth about what happened would emerge soon.

Babette Solon Hollister, 79, whose 20 year old daughter died on the PanAm flight said: "I don't know if he was totally guilty but we know he was involved ... I doubt anything will be resolved now."

Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC), which ousted Gaddafi last year, has said it would work with the Scottish government over the possible involvement of others in the 1988 bombing, an attack the country's new rulers are eager to distance themselves from.

"We would have liked to uncover more truths, but his death will not shut the Lockerbie file," NTC spokesman Mohamed al-Harizy said on Sunday.

Gaddafi's Libya emerged from isolation after it scrapped a banned weapons program and paid compensation for the Lockerbie bombing.

Megrahi was handed over by Libya with fellow suspect Al-Amin Khalifa Fahima under a U.N.-brokered deal. Fahima was acquitted by the Scottish judges at Camp Zeist in January 2001.

Megrahi was jailed in the town of Greenock, near Glasgow.

On Sunday, his neighbors in the Libyan capital rolled out a carpet and set up chairs in the courtyard outside his house in preparation for condolence visits by family and friends.

"My brother was surrounded by his wife, children and his mother as he took his last breath," his brother Abdulhakim said.

Q&A: Dinty W. Moore on Buddhism, creativity, kindness & taming the ...

Listen to where the writing wants to take you. Understand that the writing itself will often provide far richer material than your logical, predictable mind. Even more ?intellect-driven? writing?for instance, a dissertation?can benefit from the cognitive leaps that occur when you stand back from the manuscript a moment and listen to your intuition.?Dinty W. Moore

?The Mindful Writer by Dinty W. Moore. Wisdom Publications, 152 pp.

?A popular image of the writer is of someone with heavy baggage and a disturbed ego. This stereotype does not fit Dinty W. Moore, though it would slight him, and ignore the dark notes in his memoirs, to paint him as blessedly free of background noise, as naturally ebullient.

Having gotten to know him at Ohio University, where he is now head of creative writing, I can say that, while Dinty doesn?t levitate?to my knowledge?he can bring the balm of a light touch?technically known as a nonreactive ego?to an English department?s creative writing unit.

And that?s really something to see. Because anyone can write a book, but leading a bunch of writers? That?s herding cats.

The Mindful Writer, his latest book?short, sweet meditations on writing?explains, as much as anything can, the source of his powers: an effort at spiritual discipline, an approach to writing that emphasizes exploration and discovery, a love of revision.

The book is divided into four parts: The Writer?s Mind; The Writer?s Desk; The Writer?s Vision; The Writer?s Life. Within each are brief chapters, each headed by a quote that Dinty loves about writing and which he then writes a few pages reflecting upon. For instance, this classic bon mot by Thomas Mann: ?A writer is someone for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people.? Writers, Dinty reflects, care about finding ?the precise word, the clearest expression, and we understand that sometimes a thought needs to be revised tens or hundreds of times.?

The Mindful Writer proceeds on two tracks at once by also inquiring into the challenges of being human. This is from the Introduction:

???? Life is full of discontent, the Buddha told us, and that discontent (sometimes translated as suffering) comes about due to our grasping at things, our craving and clinging?the desire to make permanent what will always be fleeting. There is, however, a way to make the inescapability of discontent less problematic in our lives. The Way, the Path, is through right action, right speech, right livelihood; through living a deliberate and intentional life.

???? As a writer, I had learned the power of releasing my control of a story, of letting the words, the characters, the images, the mysterious underpinnings of a piece of prose take me in unexpected directions. The less I grasped at and choked my writing, the more it seemed to expand into areas that surprised and pleased not just me but the reader as well. Even my ?noncreative? writing?business memos, application letters, proposals, and reports?were strengthened by this realization.

???? From the other end, I had seen how my ego and desires would inevitably lead me toward writer?s block and self-loathing, how worrying about critical responses or negative reactions would eventually dry up whatever creative flow I had managed to bring forth.

Dinty makes all that he does look so effortless?get an idea, write a book, move on; edit Brevity, the online journal of concise nonfiction; teach and mentor and lead workshops around the world?that it?s salutary to hear of his struggles. He tells about the time he worked on a book for four years and then abandoned it because it posed a storytelling problem he couldn?t solve. He was confused and angry, but then realized that the project had been making him miserable and he should move on. He shelved it and soon published his favorite book (which he doesn?t name but which sounds like The Accidental Buddhist).

The Mindful Writer offers these core principles, based on Buddhism?s four major precepts, for lessening angst by admitting difficulties and letting them go:

The Four Noble Truths For Writers

?? The writing life is difficult, full of disappointment and dissatisfaction.

?? Much of the dissatisfaction comes from the ego, from our insistence on controlling both the process of writing and how the world reacts to what we have written.

?? There is a way to lessen the disappointment and dissatisfaction and to live a more fruitful writing life.

?? The way to accomplish this is to make both the practice of writing and the work itself less about ourselves. To thrive, we must be mindful of our motives and our attachment to desired outcomes.

Despite the seeming astringency of these precepts, The Mindful Writer emphasizes the writer?s joy of creating and discovering at least as much as it does the writer?s struggle and pain. I?ll reread it many times, I?m sure, for inspiration and solace.

Dinty answered some questions for Narrative:

You were Catholic, born and bred, according to The Accidental Buddhist. Yet Buddhism seems to have given you the spiritual tools you needed, as it has so many westerners. Why?

?For me, Catholicism was all about the negative?you are bad, you were born bad, you are not grateful enough for the death of Jesus, you will always be bad, you are being bad right now.? This has much to do with having gone through Catholic school in the 1960s and 1970s, however, and is not necessarily an accurate reflection of the Catholic experience. I speak to contemporary Catholics and hear stories of a church which seems entirely foreign to me, and one much more open to the beautiful teachings of Jesus, rather than just the stern warnings of the Pope. But for me, there was nothing spiritual in the Catholic faith of my childhood, and nothing to guide me in any positive way. I?m not arguing that Buddhism is a better spiritual path, just that it was open to me at the right time in my life, and thank goodness for it.

If someone wants to begin a Buddhist practice, or one based upon its proven methods, such as meditation and mindfulness, what?s a good way to learn enough to go about it? In your experience, would it be best seek out teachers, or can books be sufficient?

Books are a good start?the works of Thich Nhat Hanh are wonderful and accessible, as are the books and tapes of Pema Chodron. There is also a wonderful book called Mindfulness in Plain English, by Bhanta Gunaratana. These are good places to start, but eventually I recommend finding a group to sit with, folks to talk to, and, if possible, a teacher.

Beware of any teacher that begins by over-complicating the practice, however. There are thousands of years of Asian culture wrapped up in Buddhism?Japanese or Tibetan or Sri Lankan, depending in which school of Buddhism you encounter?but cultural trappings are not the heart of Buddhism. The teaching of the man we call the Buddha, and what others have discovered through that teaching over the centuries, is what matters. There is nothing wrong with the ritual of Zen or of Tibetan Buddhism, but don?t mistake it for the spiritual message.

How has your Buddhist practice helped you live with yourself and others in more harmony?

Dinty W. Moore, in black and white

The most powerful lesson for me is that I?not others?create my own anger and annoyance, and I?not outside forces?create most of my reality.? So if these phenomena are of my own creation, I have much more control over them than I previously thought.

If a co-worker is driving me up a wall, as the saying goes, it is my wall, I have assembled the wall, and I can take that wall down, brick by brick, if I choose to. Or to put it another way, I can?t expect to have any control over how my co-worker acts or what annoying remarks he repeats time and again in meetings, but what I can control is my own reaction. So instead of choosing to get all tied up in knots over certain things, that knot-tying being much of what makes me miserable and frustrated, I just shrug, literally or figuratively, and move on to the next thing. This seems so simple, but it is powerful once you internalize it, and see how easily it works to dissipate many?not all, but many?daily annoyances.

The second step?compassion?is trying to understand why the other person is acting in the way he or she acts.? This person does not wake up in the morning thinking, ?Gee, I?m going to annoy Dinty today and make him miserable.? The reality is something very different.? Being open to hearing what the person is really asking, or what the person is really worried about, or why the person repeatedly misreads the situation, makes you open to finding a solution, and that solution may alleviate suffering for both of you, which is a good thing indeed.

What is your practice exactly?

I?m getting uncomfortable offering advice here. Understand that I am a struggling, beginning Buddhist who appreciates what he has learned but has no claim to enlightenment or self-righteous superiority. My practice is to try to do what I outlined in the answer above more often than not, and to attempt mindfulness?being in the moment?rather than constant distraction.? I meditate sometimes but not on a disciplined schedule, and I don?t do much else. I don?t burn incense, chant, or wear robes. This is not a religion for me, but a way of living, of thinking, and of trying to retain some control over my own life. Modern man is buffeted by so many outside forces and stimuli that I think we have to be deliberate about finding our center.

I?ve been impressed by your creativity, meaning not just by your published books or their diversity but by the range of your essays?even in cutting-edge noncommercial forms like your Google Maps essay and your video essay?on your genetic roots in Scotland?and by your photography. Once you even showed me a neat graphic essay about your father and grandfather. Can you speak to your efforts to be an artist in the larger sedigital essay?nse, as someone who creates, as opposed to being someone who is a ?writer? and who wants to ?get published??

?I tried to be a filmmaker once, and did make a handful of small, experimental movies, and then dabbled in acting and modern dance, even performed with a small experimental dance troupe for four years. I still want to be a painter. I?d love to be a stand-up comic.

Writing seems to be the one art form I have any real talent for, however, or maybe it is just the one that I put most of my discipline and effort into. I regularly daydream about making a life in one of the other art forms. I don?t know what that means, or if it even addresses your question.? But to me creativity is the asking of questions, and trying to find answers to those questions in some manner other than the purely cognitive or logical.? Sure, getting published feels darn good, especially because it means more and more eyeballs are looking at what you do, but there is actually more joy in the creative process?on the good day?then there is on the publishing end of the activity.

You?ve mentioned that you write for a few hours each morning. What role does reading play in your writing practice?

Not enough lately: a common complaint of those of us who teach regularly and rigorously.? I read a lot of student work, which I?m happy to do, privileged really, but my eyes aren?t getting any younger, and it is more and more difficult to keep up with all of the great writing that is out there, and the great writing that will be coming out next week. But I try. That?s all I can do.? I try to read writers who don?t write like me. I try to expand my taste, to create as wide a net as possible.

?My previous interview with Dinty Moore about his book on essay writing is here.

Backed By Mark Cuban, WhiteyBoard Launches v2 Of Its Paint That Turns Walls Into Whiteboards

YELLOW ROOM (1)-jpgTwo years ago, WhiteyBoard founders Saachi Cywinski, Sherwin Kim and Jason Wilk set out to re-think those clunky, inflexible whiteboards found in classrooms and offices around the country. They developed a portable, flexible alternative: An inexpensive, "instant" plastic board that weighs less than two pounds and adheres to any surface without screws. Wilk tells us that WhiteyPaint has since found an eager audience, leading to the fortunate problem of demand quickly outpacing supply. Struggling to finance demand on a bootstrapped budget, the founders reached out to Dallas Mavericks owner, Shark Tank investor, and HDNet Co-founder Mark Cuban. Seeing a billion-dollar market dominated by a few bloated players, Wilk said, Cuban believed WhiteyBoard was onto something.

(AP) ? Hollywood star Will Smith has slapped a male television reporter who tried to kiss him before the Moscow premiere of "Men in Black III."

The reporter from the Ukrainian television channel 1+1 approached Smith on the red carpet, put his hand on the actor's shoulder and tried to kiss him.

Smith pushed him away and then slapped him lightly across the cheek with the back of his left hand.

It was not clear whether reporter Vitalii Sediuk intended to kiss Smith on the cheek or on the lips.

In any case, Smith appeared shocked by the journalist's behavior at Friday night's premiere in the Russian capital.

Computer Viruses Via Email | Everything About Computer

Adversaries and cyber criminals have been exploiting vulnerabilities of network infrastructures for companies, businesses, universities, government agencies, organizations, and personal computer networks now more than ever. People with malicious intent whether they are hackers, terrorist aiming for information, money launderers, or just computer savvy people wanting to practice their skills on networks, have been more aggressively committing crimes over the internet especially involving viruses. A virus is a software program that is designed to infect a computer or network system by spreading itself through as many computers as possible. Some of the dangers of a virus is they can delete files from a system, help gain access to information on a system, record keystrokes, or use a denial of service attack which is completely stopping an authorized user from accessing information whether from the hard drive, server, database, etc.

Out of all the things that can go wrong with a computer, catching a virus is one of the worst.

Viruses are mostly spread by email attachments and instant messaging and are a very common used by malicious people. By sending viruses by email, the attacker has a better chance of a recipient opening the email attachment when it is addressed to them. Viruses can be hidden behind attachments like audio and video files, pictures, documents files, greeting cards, and more. In today's world, email is a necessity for more effective communication between friends, coworkers, or consumer to business relations. People email their friends whether they live next door or around the world. Coworkers have to use email as a relay/response mechanism to get work completed at the job. Consumers email businesses for information about products and services, businesses use consumer's email to send newsletters, coupons, and other advertisement, etc. There is a huge market for people using email that was not always there. More people use personal and business email services now than several years ago because of the reasons stated previously.

It is understood that the email usage of people have spiked through the years because of work, personal use, and conducting business. Another reason why viruses come in emails more now than a few years ago is the advancement of computer knowledge for malicious users. Hackers, adversaries, malicious people have access to the same IT classes and material as anybody else. Technology has advanced tremendously over the years and there are many valuable resources online that can teach people how to create a virus. Then you have these same malicious people who have perfected coding, networking, and other IT avenues that they can now use against ethical users.

The question that everyone wants to know is: How do we stop viruses? Honestly there is no for sure way to completely stop all viruses that are surfing through the internet. There are ways to protect yourself from most viruses and limit your chances of becoming infected by it. First, get a good antivirus that blocks viruses, scan emails for viruses, and scan the system for viruses for quarantines and deletions. There are some good antivirus tools that are available for free and purchase. One of the best free antivirus tools available is by VIPRE Antivirus Premium is high-performance antivirus + antispyware software with an integrated firewall. It doesn't slow down your PC like other antivirus products. Using its next-generation technology, it protects your computer from all malware threats including viruses, adware, spyware, worms, rootkits, phishing attacks and much more. Spam blockers, spyware blockers, and anti-phishing tools are other services that need to be considered when protecting the computer network from viruses as well as worms, phishing emails, and Trojans. Always remember to keep the antivirus updated, complete a virus scan regularly, and be very cautious opening certain emails.

Is it hopeless to try to compute the shortest route to visit a large number of cities? Not just a good route but the guaranteed shortest. The task is the long-standing challenge known as the traveling salesman problem, or TSP for short.

Finding a method that can quickly solve every example of the TSP would be a stunning breakthrough in mathematics. Using complexity theory, such a method would allow us to solve efficiently any computational problem for which answers can be easily verified. Most mathematicians expect this to be impossible.

But suppose that you are handed the locations of 100,000 cities. Is it really impossible to find the shortest route? We are not asking for a solution to every instance of the TSP, just the quickest way around these specific locations.

To take up the challenge, your best bet is to follow Yogi Berra?s advice: ?When you come to a fork in the road, take it.? A tool called linear programming allows us to do just that by assigning fractions to roads that join pairs of cities rather than deciding immediately whether to use a road or not. In this model, it is perfectly fine to send half a salesman along both branches of the fork. The process begins with the requirement that, for every city, the fractions assigned to the arriving and departing roads each sum to 1. Then, step by step, further restrictions are added, each involving sums of fractions assigned to roads. Linear programming eventually points us to the best decision for each road and thus the shortest possible route.

I should add that 100,000 cities is not a hypothetical challenge. Current computations are zeroing in on the solution to a pretty set of 100,000 points created by Robert Bosch of Oberlin College, where the tour traces out a drawing of the Mona Lisa. We may not be able to knock off every example of the TSP, but new ideas can push the frontiers of solvability.

Here is the big picture: complexity theory suggests there are limits to the power of general computational techniques in science and elsewhere. What are these limits and how widely do they constrain our quest for knowledge? That is what research into the TSP is all about.

Repsol: Exploratory oil well off Cuba comes up dry

HAVANA (AP) ? An exploratory oil well off the northern coast of Cuba has proved a failure and will be capped and abandoned, Spanish company Repsol said Friday, a disappointment for a cash-strapped nation hoping for an economic lifeline.

Trial and error is par for the course in oil exploration, however, and analysts said the news is far from a death blow to Cuba's petroleum dreams.

Repsol SA is evaluating the data it collected since the Scarabeo-9 rig arrived off the coast of Havana in January after a months-long, round-the-world trek from construction sites in China and Singapore. The company has not yet decided whether to sink further wells in the area, spokesman Kristian Rix said.

Rix said four of every five offshore wells come up dry, and it's too soon to determine whether other parts of Repsol's exploration block are commercially viable.

"Mapping an (offshore) oil field is like trying to draw a map of a city when all you have is one in 10 lampposts working and a bit of a fog," Rix said by phone from Madrid. "It's very hard to do, so I can't draw any conclusions from one well about the whole rest of it. These are questions that geologists will have to answer."

Nor does the failed well mean that the rest of Cuba's offshore exploratory area, which has been estimated to hold 5 billion to 9 billion barrels, is barren.

"I think it's disappointing news, but in my opinion it doesn't mean that the whole of the Cuban north belt is not a geological zone that in the future could produce a substantial amount of hydrocarbons," said Jorge Pinon, former president of Amoco Oil Latin America and now an energy expert at the University of Texas.

"It's disappointing, but it's not surprising," he added.

The Cuban government did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The project has generated controversy in the United States, with concerns of a possible environmental disaster like the 2010 Macondo-Deepwater Horizon blowout and spill on the other side of the Gulf.

Many feared it would be impossible for longtime foes in Washington and Havana to coordinate response and containment, threatening large stretches of coastline in Cuba, Florida and beyond. Repsol has sought to allay those fears by opening up the drill rig to U.S. inspectors, and by openly sharing data with both governments.

Meanwhile Cuban-American politicians have criticized the Obama administration for not stopping the drilling altogether. The 50-year-old U.S. economic embargo already essentially bars American companies from doing oil business with Cuba and threatens sanctions against foreign companies if they don't follow its restrictions, but hard-liners say even tougher measures are needed to discourage firms like Repsol from teaming up with the Cubans.

"The Obama Administration looked the other way as Repsol aided the Cuban tyranny's dangerous scheme to become the oil barons of the Caribbean," Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen said in a statement Friday.

The sanctions have greatly complicated the drilling project, making it far more difficult to line up equipment and resources. The massive Scarabeo-9 platform had to be constructed in Asia with less than 10 percent U.S.-made parts to avoid violating the embargo.

Cuba has been struggling to lift its weak economy out of the doldrums for years, and the prospect of oil riches is a major part of the country's master plan. A big find would also lessen Cuba's reliance on Venezuela, which gives Cuba $3 billion a year in oil subsidies, but whose leader is ailing with cancer.

The failure of the well is also surely a letdown for Repsol, which has now come up empty in two Cuban wells drilled over the last decade. Repsol and its partners were leasing the rig for about a half-million dollars a day.

Rix declined to say how much has been spent to carry out the exploration.

Pinon said the typical cost of sinking a deep-water well in the Gulf of Mexico runs around $100 million to $150 million.

Also weighing on the company's Cuba plans is its dispute with Argentina over that nation's takeover of Repsol's majority stake in oil and gas producer YPF, Pinon said.

"You have to add the challenges that Repsol is having vis-a-vis YPF Argentina," he said. "Will the challenges that Repsol is going to have force them to focus more of their worldwide exploration into areas in which they know that there is a lower risk, for example the U.S. Gulf of Mexico?"

Diplomats and industry sources say the Scarabeo-9 rig will be rented out next by Malaysian oil company Petronas for exploration north of Cuba's Pinar del Rio province, to the west of Havana.

Justin Bieber Helps Usher 'Relive' Teen Years

'The first reaction is like no other,' Usher says on 'MTV First' about witnessing Bieber's ascent to fame.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway

<P>Back in 1994, a teenaged <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a> dropped his self-titled debut album and skyrocketed to fame. Nearly 20 years later, Usher is still on top, having lost little career momentum. While he's maintained his own career over the years, he also helped launch <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> to mega-fame as well.</P><P>As Bieber continues to grow as an artist, Usher explained that the 18-year-old has built up the kinds of friendships and relationships that he would have wanted as a kid star. "Cool part about it is, he's really able to live a dream that I think most teenagers would want to. To be able to have friends like Mayweather. They are actual friends, hang out, talk," Usher told MTV News during "MTV First" about Bieber's friendship with boxer <a href="/news/articles/1685155/50-cent-justin-bieber-floyd-mayweather-fan.jhtml">Floyd Mayweather</a>, who he recently hung out with in Las Vegas. "I didn't have a ton of people like that. I had Puff. I had JD [producer Jermaine Dupri] ... but to be able to have friends all around the world that keep you, it's cool."</P><P>Their friendship was on full display recently when Usher performed in <a href="/news/articles/1685228/justin-bieber-usher-twisted.jhtml">"Fuerza Bruta" back in April</a> in New York City. Just chill out.' <i>Set it up</i>," he recalled about tricking the sleepy globe-trotting star to hang with him at the show. "[We] brought him to the middle of the dance floor, and we got it in. But we always show support for each other like that. We was housing a little bit."</P><P>The guys will soon go head to head on the <i>Billboard</i> charts: Usher is set to drop his album, <a href="/news/articles/1685178/usher-looking-4-myself.jhtml"><i>Looking 4 Myself</i></a>, on June 12, and one week later, Bieber will release <a href="/news/articles/1684079/justin-bieber-believe-album-cover.jhtml"><i>Believe</i></a>. latest news: Is There Any Evidence That Meditation Helps ...

Today, arthritis patients are not only more receptive to complementary therapies- what has been called alternative therapy- but actually prefer it to conventional medicines.

There are many reasons for this. These reasons include the adverse publicity surrounding the side effects of medicines such as Vioxx and Bextra, cost of pharmaceutical agents, insurance restrictions that make it difficult for patients to get the types of medicines they need, and the widely held concept that "natural" implies safe.

As has been demonstrated on multiple occasions, a natural remedy is not necessarily safe, nor is it necessarily even effective.

However, there are natural therapies for which there is little evidence supporting their usefulness in conditions like arthritis, but also a paucity of data showing they are harmful.

Such is the case with meditation. Meditation not only is safe but has had beneficial applications in other rheumatic conditions such as fibromyalgia.

A recent study has demonstrated that meditation may also be useful as an adjunctive treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

A meditation training program, called Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was developed by Dr. Kabat-Zinn and other researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. MBSR teaches participants to focus the mind in a special way. This technique is supposed to increase clarity and calmness.

Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine assessed the effect of this meditation therapy on depressive symptoms, psychological distress, general well-being, and disease activity among RA patients. The results of the study indicates that there are potential benefits of MBSR and that it can be used with a conventional course of physical and pharmacological therapy.

Sixty-three adult RA patients were selected to participate in this novel pilot study. The subjects averaged 54 years in age and predominately women. All patients remained under their rheumatologist's care and continued to take their routine medications throughout the study.

Thirty-one of the participants were randomized to receive MBSR therapy, starting with an 8-week training course followed by a 4-month maintenance program. The remaining 32 participants were assigned to a waiting list, agreeing to attend assessment sessions in exchange for free MBSR training at the study's conclusion.

Both groups of participants underwent psychological and rheumatological examinations at baseline, and again at 2 months and 6 months into the study. Researchers used the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised, a self-report questionnaire, to evaluate depressive symptoms and psychological distress. Overall well-being was measured by the Psychological Well-Being Scales, made up of questions designed to evaluate positive outlook and approach to coping with difficulties. RA clinical factors were assessed by the Disease Activity Score in 28 joints (DAS-28).

Researchers compared scores of psychological and physical disease symptoms among MBSR participants with those of the control group. Patients receiving MBSR found the program to be enjoyable and continued throughout the follow-up period.

After 2 months, both groups showed improvements in depressive, psychological, and emotional symptoms, with no significant difference between the MBSR group and the control group. By 6 months, however, gains in the control group had largely disappeared, while MBSR participants maintained or improved further in psychological outcomes. By the end of the study, the MBSR group achieved a significant 35 percent reduction in psychological distress.

The meditation program had no impact on RA disease activity, measured by the DAS-28, which is a composite score derived from swollen joints, tender joints, and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR).

The studies flaws include its small sample size and the relative homogeneity of the control group.

The study showed that patients with RA may benefit from a meditation program such as MBSR class. MBSR is also safe and appealing to participants. The lead investigator, Dr. Elizabeth Pradhan, also states, "For doctors wishing to offer patients a complement to medical management, mindfulness meditation may offer hope for improving psychological distress and strengthening well-being in patients with RA."

The Butterfly Effect - A Look At Vertical Doors | TOP SITE HOME ...

How about one thing remarkable. Something by no means earlier than skilled by most drivers. Something that makes waves. How concerning the butterfly impact?

Butterfly doorways, also known as vertical door or lambo doorways, originated to solve a problem. The Lamborghini had a very extensive base, and a traditional door design would not allow for simple coming into and exiting, especially if parked subsequent to anything. They devised a door hinge system that lifts the doors vertically, and solely slightly out war, clearing the door of the opening, and likewise permitting the large physique automotive to nonetheless fit in conventional spaces.

These doors catch a lot of attention. When door open vertically, you get the ?butterfly? impact, making waves wherever you are. People cease and notice some of these modifications because they?re uncommon, unique, and really appealing. These kits are actually accessible for many vehicles, and come as a common kit that may be fitted to virtually any vehicle. A number of the kits will require a bit physique work, but others are a direct bolt in. The hinges, fuel shocks, and hardware could not appear like $750 to $one thousand worth of materials, but the completed results is properly worth the money for many automobile enthusiasts and tuners.

We recommend professional installation for these kind of kits, mainly as a result of in a variety of circumstances, the inside fender wells must be rolled or modified to suit the brand new brackets and hinges. Most of the kits are adjustable sufficient to create a singular vertical opening while retaining it pretty straightforward to get in and out of the vehicle. Look for kits that enable for each vertical and horizontal changes to be made for the absolute best combination of style and comfort.

Butterfly doorways are becoming the craze at most tuner events and shows. Some automobiles look higher than different with the mods completed to them, and you?ll in all probability find photographs of your automobile mannequin with them put in somewhere on the internet. I would counsel seeing a completed product earlier than investing the money. The kits are in most cases fully reversible if you?re unsatisfied for any cause, or intend to promote the automobile at a future date.

If you wish to flip you ride into an actual showstopper, these kits are the best way to go. They arrive in manual and computerized varieties. Vertical doors are an incredible addition to any show car. Vertical Doors, Inc. is credited with the patent on the design we are most familiar with. There have been a number of company create similar products marketed under the product ?sort? known as vertical doors. They?re additionally referred to as butterfly doorways, or 90 diploma doors. Either method, they provide our daily drivers a pleasant unique sports activities car look.

There are some types of doorways on the market that may match the invoice if you?re in search of that further one thing to add to your show car. There are the normal ?vertical? doors which open vertically. See image below. These kits use specifically made brackets and gasoline shocks to open the doors outward slightly, then upwards. They can be adjusted to open additional our before going as much as make it simpler to get out and in of, as a typical drawback to the door kits is the increased issue of getting in and out of the vehicle.

There are different kinds of door modifications that can be performed, corresponding to ?suicide? doorways that open exactly the other of traditional doors. The hinges are moved to the opposite facet of the door opening so it swings the other way. Also a cool upgrade.

Nonetheless my personal favorite is the Dalorian type door as seen in again to the future. These doorways are hinged within the center of the roof, and raise straight up permitting for straightforward access in and out of the vehicle. Any such modification would name for some intensive mods to the roof system, as well as some fabricated doorways, however it will make for a critical upgrade!

If you are thinking about making an attempt to put in your own vertical door conversion kits, be warned, it can be tricky, but here is a guide that can assist you in the process.

1. Lift the hood and take away left and proper defend of front wheel.

2. With the door open pull out the rubber hose connecting the door and the door body, draw out and lower the wire (wrap the 2 ends of each minimize wires with friction tape and file the given numbers. If the wires are lengthy sufficient, it ?s not essential to cut.) and then take away the rubber hose of the wires.

3. With door closed remove the manufacturing facility top door hinge.

4. Check and draw the location of the mechanism. Take note of the moving manner of the swing arm and make sure the swing arm as much as 90? not to touch the protect or fender. So the mechanism have to be in a proper peak, which may be examined by the shield.

5. Grind the installation placement of the chassis or hammer any extrusions that will hinder the bottom plates from sitting flat. You may additionally grind and lower the bottom plate and door plate as needed.

B. After grinding the set up placement, check the right distance with the shield and test and observe any places which will prevent the base plate and the swing arm from moving. In this situation you could draw a line around the base plate when it is in the proper, after which lower or hammer along the perimeter until to not hinder.

C. In vehicles with small areas between the chassis floor and the fender there won?t be enough space to install. It can be solved as follows: with the place of the bottom plate determined, draw a line across the base plate when it is in the correct position, and then minimize alongside the perimeter to permit the bottom plate to slip below the surface.

6. Decide the holding place and space. Draw the position of the safety arch on the base plate and cut it. Reduce a slot in the chassis to accommodate the arch, and if the bottom plate is beneath the chassis floor on your application make extra house for adjustment with a hex key.

7. Subsequent it is best to cover the bottom plate, door, and the remainder parts of the door mechanism in welding deflection paper with the exception of the floor of the surface that may get welded for the surface protection.

8. When the door mechanism clings to the chassis, door place, and moves smoothly and
is correct in both horizontal and vertical route after testing again, weld spots around the perimeter of the base plate and the door plate. When you really feel the welds are sturdy enough, remove the down door hinge. You might observe and check whether or not the door is within the correct movement and position by swinging it out and up manually. Now you can make changes at the door outward motion screws, security set screw and door height screws etc. on the door mechanism.

9. Decide and draw on the shield or fender the place space of the swing arm?s movement and cut it. Test it once more and minimize the inside lip to supply clearance for the swing arm.

10. Once you might be happy with the operation and placement like opening, closing, lifting and falling of the door and door mechanism, hammer the hinge middle axis of the mechanism from top to bottom after which take away the door. Make a strong weld around the entire perimeter of the base plate and door plate. (Parts must be prevented from broiling of the excessive temperature whereas welding.)

11. Grind and scuff the welds floor and masks the undercoat paint and high coating to forestall rust.

12. Lube the transferring surfaces of the door mechanism with heavy waterproof grease after which close the door, align the hinge holes and interpose the center axis to the holes kind top to bottom and then hammer it effectively and smoothly.

13. When the door is open up to the utmost angle, clear up the wires. Measure the wires and hook up with the required size with different wires if it isn?t lengthy enough. Bear in mind to attach with the numbers whereas slicing and to masks the joints with the insulation tapes. With the wires plaited into cluster, fastened on the backside of the swing arm with plastic and string.

14. Open the door and rotate it to the very best point, screw two ball joints into the swing arm and gasoline spring connecting plot respectively with gasoline spring screws and then decide and mark the spot where the ball joint will get mounted on the chassis.

15. Put the door down for now and disconnect the gasoline spring ball screw kind the gas spring connecting plot and then hammer or grind the fastened place of the connecting plot and weld it nicely on the fixed place. Paint for dust prevention.

16. Open the door to the very best point and screw the gas spring ball factors into the connecting plot and lock the ball factors on the swing arm tightly at the similar time. And check the doors motion. The swing arm needs to be parallel and never interferes with the gasoline spring or other parts when the door moves up and down.

17. With the door closed, test the door?s horizontal motion till the door is aligned with the latch and closes perfectly. Alter the security arch until the door mechanism not interferes with the defend or fender when the door out all the best way horizontally. Then set the horizontal motion screws to correspond with the angle that the protection arch rubs the inside of the lifting arm when up. The nearer you make these two changes, the more sturdy the door will feel going up and resting within the vertical position. Set the vertical peak limiter adjustment as high as you would like offered that the door doesn?t hit the shield or different parts.

18. If the door panel and/or door metallic hits the shield or comes too near the defend on the way in which up it have to be cut. If the door panel have to be reduce first mark a line that can allow clearance. Then peel back the upholstery, make the cut and wrap the upholstery over the brand new edge with spray adhesive.

19. Check it once more until no any hinder and glad with the whole lot; seal the screw adhesive to all the screw points.

20. Mount the protect, fender etc. and put down the hood. This can full the installation.

Tizen OS will run Android apps -- with a little help from third-party software (video)

As Tizen's open-source OS continues to make its first steps into the world, there's some good news for anyone concerned with a weak app line-up. It looks like both Android versions and Samsung's own Bada SDK will be supported through an application compatibility layer (ACL) which works along similar lines to the Android app player on BlackBerry's Playbook. Open Mobile, which is responsible for the ACL, claim it'll have 100 percent compatibility with Google's back catalogue and be just as responsive -- some pretty heady statements. The company wants its program be included on the OEM side of the equation -- this isn't aimed at humble end-user tinkerers. For now, you can check how its ACL fares in a quick video walkthrough after the break. (It's worth noting that the demo tablet isn't running on the Tizen UI -- it looks like we'll have to loiter around for some more hardware.)
