Markey takes oath to become member of Senate

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Massachusetts Democrat Edward Markey on Tuesday became the newest member of the Senate, taking the oath of office after serving 37 years on the other side of the Capitol in the House.

Markey, 67, takes the seat that John Kerry won in 1984 and held until he resigned earlier this year to become secretary of State.

Last month Markey defeated Gabriel Gomez, a 47-year-old businessman and former Navy SEAL, in a special election. He will fill out the rest of Kerry's term, which expires in January 2015, meaning he would have to run again in November next year for a full six-year term.

Markey, the son of a milkman, was first elected to the House in 1976 at age 30. He has risen to become one of the Democrats' leading voices on energy and communications issues, and ranked eighth in seniority in the House when he stepped down.

As a freshman member of the Senate, he becomes the junior senator from Massachusetts, behind fellow Democrat Elizabeth Warren, who last November won a close race over Republican Sen. Scott Brown. Markey, backed by visits from President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and former President Bill Clinton in the final weeks of the campaign, cruised to a 55-45 win.

William "Mo" Cowan, former chief of staff to Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, served as interim senator after Kerry's departure. The Senate lineup remains at 54 on the Democratic side, including two independents, and 46 Republicans.

The next special election will be held in October, to complete the term of the late New Jersey Democrat Frank Lautenberg. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie appointed a Republican, Jeff Chiesa, to temporarily serve as senator until that election.

Biden delivered the oath to Markey, who was flanked by Warren and Cowan.

On hand for the swearing in were House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Patrick and Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass.

EU says Google not doing enough in antitrust case

PARIS (AP) ? The European Union's competition chief says Google isn't doing enough to overcome concerns that it's stifling competition, and ordered the Internet giant to come up with new ideas.

The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, has been investigating for three years whether Google Inc. is abusing its 90 percent market share in Internet searches in Europe to favor its own services. Google has sought to address the concerns mainly by changing how it displays search results.

EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said Wednesday that after hearing from other companies and organizations, "I concluded that proposals that Google sent to us months ago are not enough to overcome our concerns."

He said he sent a letter to Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt "asking Google to present better proposals."

In response, Google spokesman Al Verney said says its proposal "clearly addresses" the four areas of concern laid out by EU authorities. "We continue to work with the commission to settle this case," he said.

In addition to Google's dominance of Internet searches in Europe, the Commission has also expressed concern about how Google manages the ads appearing next to its search results, how Google displays content from other websites and how its actions affect advertising on rival networks.

Both sides say they are committed to reaching a settlement. Without one, the Commission could formally file a case against Google, leading to a lengthy process that could result in fines worth 10 percent of Google's annual revenue.

The European Commission has often taken a harder line with U.S. tech companies than its American counterparts, the Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department. Google settled a similar antitrust complaint on its search business with the FTC in January without making any major concessions on how it runs its search engine.

Obamacare: Costing 58,000 Californians Their Health Insurance ...

Remember when Barack Obama stood before the American people and said ?if you like your healthcare plan, you can keep your healthcare plan?? Well, like everything else that comes out of his mouth that was a lie. Fifty-eight thousand Californians are about to learn that the hard way.

Why is this? Apparently two of the companies that offer individual coverage in California have decided they are pulling out of the market next year, once the individual mandate takes effect.

The Los Angeles Times reports:

The nation?s largest health insurer, UnitedHealth Group Inc., is leaving California?s individual health insurance market, the second major company to exit in advance of major changes under the Affordable Care Act.

UnitedHealth said it had notified state regulators that it would leave the state?s individual market at year-end and force about 8,000 customers to find new coverage. Last month, Aetna Inc., the nation?s third-largest health insurer, made a similar move affecting about 50,000 existing policyholders.

Both companies will keep a major presence in California, focusing instead on large and small employers. They both have relatively small shares in the market in California. United Health has about 2 percent of the market and Aetna has about 5 percent. Both companies will be providing coverage in the group market, mainly through employers.

?The business model of health insurance is fundamentally changing and some companies are willing and able to adapt,? Georgetown University professor Sabrina Corlette told the Times. ?Given the limited market share those carriers had, UnitedHealth and Aetna have made the calculation that it required too much of an investment to change their strategy in California.?

According to the Times, beginning January 1, 2014, ?the federal healthcare law forces insurers to accept all individual applicants regardless of their medical history and provide a comprehensive set of benefits with limits on patients? out-of-pocket spending.?

Michael Tennant, from The New American adds:

In other words, Obamacare ?basically outlaws anything that follows the principles of insurance,? as Dr. Jane Orient of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons told The New American in 2010. That, in turn, makes the insurance business unprofitable, especially in the individual market, which is expected to be flooded next year with individuals heretofore unable to obtain coverage because of their costly pre-existing conditions.

That is also why UnitedHealth has decided to offer coverage in just a dozen or so state insurance exchanges, government-run marketplaces for individual health insurance. (Both UnitedHealth and Aetna had already announced that they would not be participating in California?s exchange.) Other insurers, too, are choosing to participate in only a limited number of exchanges, an outcome that Milton Johnson, chief financial officer of HCA Holdings, Inc., the country?s largest hospital chain, told Bloomberg ?has probably been the biggest surprise? result of Obamacare.

Part of the problem is that though the Obama administration believes it can force people to buy a product, it cannot force companies to sell it, or at least hasn?t attempted to do that just yet.

The Obama administration has known for month that it wouldn?t be able to implement Obamacare and yet carried on as if it was in complete control. They also know it will cripple the healthcare industry and strike a major blow to the economy.

While we?ve seen that the administration attempt to delay the implementation of the employer mandate for a year, they are unwilling to offer that delay to individuals. However, most Americans would side with Senator Ted Cruz, who introduced legislation that would completely defund Obamacare, and all 45 Republican Senators who called for a permanent delay of implementing Obamacare. After all, the miserable mess that is Obama?s signature legislation is already a dismal failure already and hasn?t even been fully implemented. As evidence of that fact, Democrats are already calling for reform of what was touted as healthcare reform!

In either case, this is not good news for many Californians and since this will span more states than California, we can rest assured this will impact many Americans in the coming year and we have Barack Obama and the Democrats in Congress to thank for it.

Baseball. Baseball Inks Mitch Williams To NLI

    July 15, 2013

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Catcher Mitch Williams, a former Georgia 7-AA Player of the Year and Major League Baseball draft pick, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the UAB baseball team for the 2014 season.

Williams played his freshman season at Marion Military Institute (MMI) in Marion, Ala., and will have three years of eligibility remaining to suit up for the Blazers.

?When we lost Andrew Dennis late in the draft, we were surprised and faced with the daunting challenge of finding ?a catcher who was ready to play at this level," UAB head coach Brian Shoop said.? "Coach Perry Roth did a remarkable job finding Mitch Williams and it ends up being a great fit both for Mitch and for UAB.?

Williams was a standout behind the plate at Coosa High School for head coach Gus Bell prior to playing one season at Marion Military Institute. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound catcher was a four-year starter and hit .417 during his senior season.

The Rome, Ga., native earned Region 7-AA Player of the Year honors, named first team all-region and picked to play in the Georgia vs. Tennessee All-Star Game during his senior season. He was also a two-time CBS Sports Max Preps Player of the Week honoree and was selected by ESPN High School as a top position player in the state of Georgia.

Williams was selected in the 39th round of the MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals in 2012, but opted to play at MMI for the 2013 campaign.

"It worked out perfect ? we had a need for a front line catcher and Mitch was still looking for a DI opportunity," Shoop said. "I think Mitch is excited and I know we are thrilled to add such a quality catcher and another left handed bat to our lineup.? We are also excited that Mitch has three years of eligibility remaining which will give us some stability to this very important position."

In addition to his already mentioned accolades, Williams was a Rawlings All-American and All-Region (Southeast Region) Honorable Mention and nationwide Top 1000 pick by Perfect Game.

Williams also played for the East Cobb Indians and Doubleday Baseball, along with being selected to play for the Washington Nationals in the 2011 Area Code games in Long Beach, Calif.
    ?
"One of our strengths last year was Jacob German and Harry Clark?s ability to throw out opposing runners," Shoop said.? "Mitch is an outstanding catch and throw guy and should continue our trend of keeping our opponent?s running game in check.? We believe our excellent pitching staff will love throwing to Mitch and will quickly come to trust him.? We are very excited to add him to our baseball family."
