The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has reached a settlement with the city of Selma, ending a lawsuit that alleged violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. The DOJ claimed that Selma retaliated against a firefighter who allegedly complained that the fire chief used ethnic slurs in the workplace.
After filing his complaint, the firefighter was demoted from his previous position as a lieutenant. He eventually resigned and took a job with another fire department.
The settlement will pay him $28,000 in back wages.
The San Antonio Field Office of the EEOC investigated and attempted to resolve the charges before referring them to the DOJ. Under the settlement, the city will modify its equal employment opportunity policies and procedures to include a specific process for investigating discrimination and retaliation complaints.
The city also agreed to conduct training on the new policies and procedures for all supervisory employees and all city fire department employees.
